FAQ's for Ohio medical marijuana card

Yes. Get an online Telehealth consultation with HelloMD in Ohio and get approved by a licensed practitioner to purchase medical marijuana in a legal dispensary.
Visit a certified physician, like HelloMD, who can confirm that you have a qualifying condition for medical marijuana. The doctor will create your profile in the state’s Patient & Caregiver Registry. Then you need to confirm and complete your registration for the program through the Patient & Caregiver Registry. Once a recommending physician has entered a patient or caregiver into the registry, the patient/caregiver will receive an email prompting them to login to their profile in the registry. You complete your application in the registry and pay the annual registration fee — $50 for patients and $25 for caregivers.

For a limited time, it costs $179 to see a HelloMD practitioner online and receive your medical marijuana card. There is a $50 charge from the state of Ohio to receive your official medical card (or $25 for a caregiver). HelloMD accepts all major credit cards and if you’re not approved, you don’t pay.

Physicians seeking to recommend medical marijuana in Ohio must have an active Certificate to Recommend (CTR) from the State Medical Board of Ohio. On HelloMD, licensed practitioners provide Telehealth consultations. It’s fast, easy and private and for a limited time costs only $179. If you’re not approved, you don’t pay.

A typical consult takes between 15 to 30 minutes. Please be prepared to have your consultation in a private, well-lit space, away from distraction. Your practitioner will also want to discuss any medications you may be on and your prior medical history.

Yes. Our practitioners will guide you in determining if cannabis is the right for you. From the privacy of your own home or office, ask all of your cannabis questions and be sure you’re getting sound medical advice.

After you are registered with the Ohio Patient & Caregiver Registry, the state will process your application and you’ll be able to download and print your Ohio medical marijuana card within 72 hours. With your card, you can begin purchasing from dispensaries.

In Ohio you download and print your card (you don’t wait for a physical card to arrive). You cannot buy medical cannabis before you are registered and approved on the Patient & Caregiver registry and have paid your annual certification fee. You’ll receive an activation link by email.

At the moment, Ohio does not recognize other states’ medical marijuana cards. However, Ohio is working to develop a reciprocity program with states that recognize an Ohio medical marijuana identification card.

Yes. A patient or caregiver registration is valid from the date it is issued and expires one year later, on the last day of the month it was issued.

The medical marijuana card you receive through Ohio’s Patient & Caregiver registry has to be renewed each year, with another Telehealth consultation with the qualified HelloMD medical practitioner. Patients will not receive an automated email from the Registry with a link to renew their registration. They will have to log into the Registry themselves, and receive a new physician recommendation.

After you receive your Patient & Caregiver Registry card, you can purchase medical marijuana from an Ohio dispensary that has received a certificate of operation by the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy. Only people with an active registry card, an active physician recommendation, and their associated government-issued ID can purchase medical marijuana.

A certified physician can recommend up to a 90-day supply of medical marijuana with three refills (totaling up to 360-day supply if appropriate for the patient).

Under Ohio’s medical marijuana law, the forms of medical marijuana that can be dispensed include oils, tinctures, plant material, patches. Vaping is allowed, but smoking cannabis, even for medical reasons, is not.

In Ohio, dispensary staff can counsel you on the appropriate type and dose of product for your medical condition. You are allowed to buy up to a 90-day supply of cannabis, with three refills permitted after that. There are different ways to calculate what constitutes a 90-day supply. For example, 90-day equivalents might be up to eight ounces of cannabis at or below 23% THC; up to 5.3 ounces of cannabis between 23% and 35% THC; or up to 9.9 grams of THC from cannabis oil, tincture, capsules, and other edible forms.

The only way to access legal medical marijuana in Ohio is to have a medical marijuana certification from a licensed medical practitioner. It’s fast and easy to do this through the online Telehealth service HelloMD. Buying medical marijuana through a state-licensed dispensary ensures you access to a quality, lab-tested medical marijuana. Your certification also prevents you from facing fines and criminal charges due to unlawful possession.
